Sophia Yeo Lynn Briggs was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1888, the eldest of five children of George Briggs and Mary Jane Lynn.
The 1911 census records Sophia living with her parents at 91 Inskip Terrace in the Shipcote area of Gateshead. George Briggs is a 54-year-old blacksmith and his wife Mary is 52. Their five children include 23-year-old Sophia, who is a shop assistant.
Sophia married William Ernest Surtees in 1912. She later married Francis Joseph Siddle in 1925 (although there appears to be no record of William’s death).
Sophia died in Derby in May 1970. She does not appear to have had children.

Can anyone explain the occurrence of Yeo in Sophia’s name? Did William Surtees die in the First World War, or did he desert his wife and emigrate?
