Samuel Cann married Caroline Yeo in 1848 [note 1].
The 1851 census records them at 6 Ordnance Court, Stoke Damerel. Samuel, a 24-year-old labourer born at Cheriton Bishop, is a visitor in the household of brewer John Cann, who might have been a relative as he was also born at Cheriton Bishop. Caroline’s age is shown as 20, her occupation as dress maker, and her place of birth as Crediton [note 2].
Samuel and Caroline emigrated to New South Wales two years later. The passenger list for the SS Maidstone, which arrived at Sydney on 12 November 1853, records them and their infant son as follows:
– Samuel is a 27-year-old labourer born at Cheriton Bishop, parents ‘John and Elizabeth, both dead’
– Caroline is 23, birthplace Sanford [sic], parents ‘James and Caroline Yew, mother in the Depot’, has relatives living in Sydney
– Charles W. Cann, ‘Born on the voyage’.
Please Contact Us if you can add to or correct the information shown. Can anyone identify Caroline’s parents James and Caroline, or find a record of her in Australia?
Notes
1. Marriage registered at Newton Abbot.
2. No matching baptism record at Crediton or in nearby parishes has been found. Sandford, mentioned in the 1853 passenger list, is a short distance north of Crediton.
