The 1861 census for Mariposa in the Canadian province of Ontario records John Butler, a 42-year-old farmer born in England, with his wife Mary Butler (age 40, born in Canada [note 1]) and three children including 11-year-old Mary Jane and 10-year-old Emma.
John Butler died in 1870. The 1871 census for Mariposa records Mary as a widow, age 49, birthplace England. Listed with her are her 19-year-old daughter Mary Jane Butler and 69-year-old Johannah Yeo [note 2].
John and Mary married about 1850 [note 3]. Their children included:
– Emma Yeo Butler (1853–1935 [note 4], married John Henry Wickett at Mariposa in 1875).

Notes
1. Née Yeo, c1822–1884. The death certificate of her daughter Emma states that Mary was born in England, as does the 1871 census quoted above. Her death certificate states that she was born in Cornwall – the informant was local farmer John Yeo (1838–1913, married Mary Ann Tucker). John was born at Kilkhampton; was he related to Mary and was she born near there?
2. Johanna’s birthplace is recorded as England. Was she Mary’s mother? She is recorded at Mariposa in 1881, age 78, see note 2 to William Yeo and Mary Ann Hobbs.
3. Presumably in Ontario; record not found.
4. 1853 is recorded as Emma’s year of birth on her death certificate, but her age as given in the 1861 census return quoted above suggests that she was born two years earlier.
