Freda C.M. Yeo – shop assistant in Southsea

Freda Charlotte Mary Yeo was born in Hampshire in 1922 to parents Frederick Frank Yeo and Ada Mary Barter [note 1].

The 1939 Register for Southsea, Hampshire lists 16-year-old Freda C.M. Yeo at 26 Abingdon Road. She is recorded as a shop assistant, living in the household of her stepfather, painter’s labourer Sidney E. Godwin. Also listed are:
– Freda’s mother Ada M. Godwin
– Freda’s sister, 34-year-old Doris A.M. Hay [note 2].

This census, taken on the eve of the Second World War, was used as a reference source for many years – the new surnames of women who later married can be seen as handwritten annotations on most pages [note 3]. Freda has two surnames marked against her name: King and Madden: the latter is mis-spelt and should be Hadden.

Freda married Randolph King in 1942, and Jack Hadden in 1974. She lived until 2009; her second husband survived her.
