George Henry Clapp Yea (1879–1969) married Isabella Murdoch at Drumlegagh, County Tyrone in 1910.
George was a son of William James Yea and Elizabeth Rider Wood and is recorded in the 1881 census for Dartmouth living with his maternal grandparents George and Susan Wood; his birthplace is given as Dartmouth.
William James Yea (1855–1936) and Elizabeth Rider Wood had married in Devon in 1878, and George Henry Clapp Yea was their only child. Elizabeth died the year after his birth.
William later moved to Scotland. The 1881 census for Melrose in the county of Fife records him living at Ravenswood House. He is a 27-year-old widower born in England, and is working as a gardener. He might have been employed to work in the gardens of Ravenswood House, which was owned by the Fairfax family. Listed with him is Ellen M. Yea, age 16, also born in England – her occupation is given as housekeeper and she is recorded as William sister [note 1].
William’s second marriage was to Ellen Donaldson in Scotland in 1882; they had two children [note 2]:
– Leah Yea (born about 1883)
– Charles W. Yea (born about 1893).
By 1911, William has re-married and is still at Ravenswood House with his wife Ellen and children Leah Yea (age 28) and Charles W. Yea (age 18). The 1921 census also records him at Ravenswood Lodge, aged 66. He is a widower and is working as a gardener; his birthplace is given as Torquay. The only other person in the household is 65-year-old Mary Scott, who is a housekeeper. Her relationship to William is not stated, nor is it clear where she is working.

1. Ellen is a good match to Ellen Marrina Yea, who was born in Torquay in 1865 to parents William Yea and Sarah Parnell. Was she perhaps not William’s sister but a cousin?
2. How can we account for these other four children? Their births were registered in Ireland:
– Marjorie Ellen Yea (1911–1961)
– William James Yea (born 1913)
– George Edward Yea (1915–2005, married Irene Fowler, son William George David Yea born 1950)
– Christina Alexa Yea (1920–2010, married George Bibbs).
