Stoke Damerel, Exeter, London and Australia

John Yeo – believed to have been from Launcells – married Ann Vrain in the Cornwall parish of St Stephen near Launceston in 1741. They soon moved to the Devon parish of Stoke Damerel, where their son Charles Yeo was baptised in 1748.

Charles Yeo married twice. From his first marriage (to Joanna Williams, at Stoke Damerel in 1770) he had a son Daniel Ross Yeo, baptised at Stoke Damerel in 1806. Charles later married Elizabeth Calloway (at Stoke Damerel in 1781). In the 1770 marriage record he is described as a shipwright, which might indicate that he was in the Royal Navy; no occupation is shown in the 1781 record.

Daniel Ross Yeo married Charlotte Brown at Ide, near Exeter in 1826. Their son Daniel Ross Yeo married Harriet Sarah Hooper in the same area in 1851 – they had seven children, and had moved to London by the time their son Henry Hooper Yeo was born.

Henry was baptised at St Pancras in 1858 and married Londoner Louisa Pavey. Their three children included Francis Ross Yeo, born in 1884. The baptism record of Henry and Louisa’s daughter Louise Ethel Yeo (1897) records Henry’s occupation as an undertaker; by the time of the 1901 census the family had moved to Shoreditch and Henry is described as a plumber.

Another son from Charles Yeo’s first marriage – also called Charles Yeo – married Jane Stephens at Stoke Damerel in 1798. Their son John Stephens Yeo emigrated to Australia and was buried at Adelaide in 1875 under the name John Stevens Yeo.
