Yoe in the 1871 census

People in thirteen households are recorded in online indexes to the 1871 census for England and Wales with the surname Yoe. None appear to be accurate.

In seven cases the surname was incorrectly written as Yoe:

1. 45-year-old coachman James Yoe, whose address is recorded as the Stable Yard, Clapton House, Hackney. James is listed with his 42-year-old wife Mary A. and his children William (age 10), Charles (12), Mary A. (14), Alfred (11), Arthur (9) and Henry (13). James’s birthplace is recorded as Eastham, a village on the Wirral peninsula in Cheshire. They are a clear match to the family of James Yeo and Mary Ann Wimshurst, who married in London in 1849.

2. 35-year-old builder George Yoe, listed in Springfield Road, Torquay with his 25-year-old wife Mary Grace and their two-year-old son Alfred. They are a clear match to George Yeo and his second wife Mary Grace Palk, who married at Ashburton in 1865.

3. 23-year-old baker Charles J. Yoe, a baker living in Plumstead. His birthplace is shown as Dawlish, making him a match to the Charles James Yeo born there in 1847 to parents John Yeo and Elizabeth Batstone, and who later married Jane Caterer Allen.

4. 47-year-old married seamstress Eliza Yoe, recorded in Holsworthy Union Workhouse. Eliza Hicks had been deserted by her husband Lawrence Ashton Yeo; she died in the same workhouse in 1881.

5. 79-year-old agricultural labourer Geo Yoe, living at Westleigh near Bideford with his 74-year-old wife Nancy. They were both born at Swimbridge and appear to be a match to George Yeo and Ann Squire, who married there in 1818.

6. 40-year-old agricultural labourer William Yoe, listed at Harepie, Tawstock with his 40-year-old wife Susan and 9-year-old son Henry. They are a clear match to the family of William Yeo and Susan Dobbs, who had married in 1861.

7. In a separate household at Collabear, Tawstock is 18-year-old farm servant Henry Yoe. He was born at Tawstock and matches a Henry Yeo whose birth was registered at Barnstaple in 1853 to parents John Yeo and Elizabeth Brace.

Further research is needed to clarify the remaining six records, but it is unlikely that Yoe is correct:

1. 19-year-old servant Eliza Yoe, living in Silverton in the household of church minister Richard Webber. Her birthplace is recorded as Bickleigh; she has not been identified.

2. 47-year-old washerwoman Elizabeth Yoe and 50-year-old mason John Yoe, living in Lower College Green in Bristol. They have not been identified.

3. 24-year-old married woman Elizabeth Yeo, listed as a boarder in the household of William Hawton in Fore Street, Devonport. Elizabeth is recorded as a seaman’s wife; she has not been identified.

4. 27-year-old farm labourer S. Yeo, listed at Treworthal, Philleigh (spelt ‘Filley’ on the return) and born locally. He has not been identified.

5. 20-year-old general servant Elizabeth Yoe, listed at 188 Union Street, Plymouth in the household of confectioner Nicholas Barter. Elizabeth’s birthplace is recorded as Plymouth; she has not been identified.

6. 22-year-old Ann Yoe, a ‘mine girl’ living in Calstock; she is recorded as the daughter-in-law of the head of the household, which at the time had a different meaning – she was his stepdaughter. Ann was living in Calstock ten years earlier, when she was recorded as Ann Yeo. Despite the discrepancy in her stated age, she might match an Ann Yeo born at Holsworthy in 1846 to parents William Yeo and Joanna Allin. Can anyone identify her?
