Burials – England and Wales

These record start in the 1530s and continue into the 21st century.

Before the introduction of civil registration of deaths in 1837, parish burial registers and headstones were the principal sources of information about when people died. These records include nonconformist and Catholic burials, and burials in civil cemeteries. Please read the notes below the table and see About these records.

To search for records, use the filters at the foot of the table, either individually or in combination, some of which might be filled when the page is opened. Putting a space before or after a filter term can be of help in refining the results. Use Tab and Shift-Tab to move between the filters.

Parishes are in the English counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset or Wiltshire unless they are in a large city or the county is stated. For nonconformist and civil burials the location shown in the ‘Parish’ column might not be a parish. See also the notes on Parishes with the same name.

Comments in square brackets are not present in the register entries. Years marked * are approximate.

References to a memorial inscription (abbreviated to ‘MI’) are to the wording on a headstone or on a memorial inside a church.
