Rupert Cholmeley Yea Dering

Rupert was born in Ireland in 1883 to parents Edgar William Wallace Dering and Marianna Emily Harding. His paternal grandparents Cholmeley Charles William Dering and Charlotte Mary Yea had married in 1846.

Rupert married Helen Margaret Fitzgerald in Dublin in 1914. He served with his father’s regiment, the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and reached the rank of Captain. He died in Belgium on 19 April 1915 during the intensive fighting of the Second Battle of Ypres, and is buried in the nearby military cemetery at Poperinghe.

Rupert and Helen’s only son, Rupert Anthony Yea Dering, was born in London six months after his father’s death, on 17 October 1915; he married Betty Bridgett Druce in London in 1940 and died in Sussex in 1975.
