Nora was born in 1872 at Ventown, Westward Ho!, the youngest of five children of Thomas Yeo Westaway and Mary Philkins, who were farming there. She had an elder sister of the same name, who died as an infant.
Nora was baptised at Northam in 1894 [note 1]. She might have had a son Eric Thomas Hillman Westaway (1899–1944), but nothing else is known about her. It has been suggested that she emigrated to Australia.
