Claude Yeo and Kathleen Mary Freeman

This couple married in Port Stanley, Ontario on 6 August 1938. The record of the marriage is accompanied by an application for a marriage licence dated three days previously, which describes them both as 23 years old and previously unmarried. The groom was a gardener (his parents Walter Freeman and Hilda Mary Archibald are named) and the bride a tobacco worker. The groom’s parents are shown as Jack Yeo and Laura Maude Stanley. The witnesses were James Gillard and the bride’s sister Helen Irene Yeo.

Seventeen years earlier, the 1921 census for Ontario shows the Yeo family at 38 Woodworth Avenue, St Thomas. Claude Yeo is six years old and is living with his parents John (29) and Laura (28) and his sister Helen (10).

John and Laura appear to have married in 1913 in Sparta – a short distance south-east of St Thomas. John may have been a son of William James Yeo, a Cornish emigrant born in 1858 (and who died in Southwood, Ontario in 1932) and Louise Stodden (1864–1942).

William James Yeo was a son of Henry Yeo of Milton Damerel, Devon (1829–1910) and might have been a descendant of Richard Yeo and Petronella Tossell, who married at Pilton in 1765.
