Please read About Families before using any of the information on this page.

The 1851 census for Cornwall records Elizabeth Yeo living in Ayr Lane in the centre of St Ives. She is recorded as a 72-year-old married woman [note 1], with no stated occupation. Listed with her is her 40-year-old daughter Patty Yeo; they were both born at St Ives. The 1841 census also records Elizabeth and Patty in Ayr Lane, Elizabeth is of independent means and Patty is a dressmaker.

No record of Elizabeth’s marriage or birth surname has been found [note 2], but the name of her husband William Yeo appears in the baptism records of their five children [note 3], who were baptised at St Ives [note 4]:
– William Yeo (see below)
– Betsy Yeo (1801–1802)
– Betsy Yeo (1803–1805) [note 5]
– Betsy Yeo (baptised 1807, married William Daniel at St Ives in 1827)
– Patty Yeo (1810–1880).

William Yeo (baptised 1798 at St Ives, son of William and Elizabeth Yeo) had two children with his wife Ann:
– John Yeo (baptised 1829 at St Ives)
– Mary Yeo (c1829–1909, married Nicholas Hocking) [note 6].

Notes
1. Elizabeth appears to have been a widow, as a William Yeo was buried at St Ives in 1836 aged 73. She died in 1857 (death registered at Penzance as Betsy Yeo, aged 83).
2. Humphrey Toms suggested that Elizabeth’s birth surname was Coke. William Yeo and Elizabeth Coke married at Kilkhampton in 1791, but confirmation is needed that this record is for the same couple.
3. William is recorded as ‘William Yaw of the Somerset Militia’ in the baptism record of their son William.
4. The 1807 and 1810 baptism records show the family surname as Yaw.
5. Buried at St Ives as Elizabeth Yow.
6. The 1871 census records Nicholas and Mary in Shute Street, St Ives. Nicholas is a 57-year-old tailor. Mary’s aunt Patty Yeo is listed with them; Mary and Patty are dressmakers.
