Birth registrations – England and Wales

Civil registration of births in England and Wales was introduced in 1837. Please read the notes below the table and at About these records.

To search for records, use the filters at the foot of the table, either individually or in combination, some of which might be filled when the page is opened. Putting a space before or after a filter term can be of help in refining the results. Use Tab and Shift-Tab to move between the filters.

Records less than 100 years old will not be displayed unless there is evidence that the person listed has died – to enquire about one of these hidden records please use the Contact Us page.

It can be helpful to leave the filter for the surname blank [note 1].

These records include a number of children whose births were not registered, but who can be identified from other information.

Comments in square brackets are not present in the registration records.

Please also use the Contact Us page if you cannot find a record you are looking for, or to send additions or corrections to the data.

Note
1. As an example, Samuel Yeo and Elizabeth Courtis were married at St Veep in 1829. In a search for their seven children born after 1837, entering ‘Yeo’ in the Surname filter and ‘Courtis’ in the Mother filter will find only one – the other six were registered with the surname Yoe. See also the third paragraph under Further surname variants.
