Notes
1. c1790–1853, born at Wincanton in Somerset, youngest son of Thomas Yeo and Mary Radford. Birthplace from the 1851 census return quoted below; a baptism record should confirm his parents.
2. c1790–1853, also recorded as Anna Maria. No baptism or marriage record found in Wiltshire or Somerset.
3. The 1851 census for Corsham records Henry living in Porkridge, his occupation carpenter and wheeler. His age is recorded as 62 and his birthplace as Wincanton; listed with him are his wife Anna Maria Yeo (age 60), son Edward Yeo (19) and daughter Anna Maria Yeo (13). The 1841 census for Corsham includes his son William and records his wife’s name as Maria.
4. Inquests were held at Corsham on 14 June 1853 into the death of Henry and Maria Yeo, as reported in the Salisbury and Winchester Journal the following Saturday, 18 June: ‘Inquests were held by Mr. Kemm, on Tuesday last, on Henry and Maria Yeo, of Puckeridge. The man, a carpenter, was found about 12 o’clock in the day in a well in his garden, by his wife, who called a young man named Barton, working in the same garden, to help her lift him out. The feet of the poor man were resting on the boards at the top of the well, the rest of his body being under water, his head downwards. The woman and Barton each took hold of a leg, but while in the act of raising him, the poor woman fell to the ground dead. The young man not being strong enough to hold him up alone, was obliged to let go his hold and get further assistance. Three or four men ran from the large stone works near, and in a few minutes he was taken out, and laid on his stomach on the ground, with his head hanging over the well. One of the persons present said he seemed to breathe after he was lifted out, once or twice; but shortly after Mr. Washbourne, surgeon came to the spot, and found both husband and wife quite dead.’
5. Married at St Swithin, Walcot. Charlotte’s surname has also been recorded as Archer; this spelling is used in the second forename of her son John. She later married James Selwood in 1902.
6. Marriage record not found – perhaps they did not marry? The 1901 census records Henry, a railway worker, and his wife Maria with their son James (age 19) in Keyford Street, Frome.
7. Married at Batcombe, Somerset in 1884. Helena’s surname was recorded as Olding on the birth certificate of her daughter Eva.
8. Son John Edward Yeo (1933–2018, married 1959).
