On the Amelia Thompson

Five years before the emigrant voyage of the James Baines, another Yeo family from Swimbridge emigrated to Australia. Their descendants have been documented by Jim Fairweather and others.

In summary, Roger Yeo and his wife Maria (née Pinsent) emigrated on the SS Amelia Thompson, arriving at Sydney on 27 September 1839. They took ten of their children with them:
– Elizabeth Maria Yeo, known as Betsy
– John Yeo
– Caroline Yeo
– James Yeo
– William Yeo
– Mary Elizabeth Yeo
– Eleanor Yeo
– Christopher Antisell Yeo
– John Yeo
– Maria Yeo
– Emma Yeo.

The family settled at Bathurst, New South Wales. Maria Yeo died there in 1864; Roger Yeo survived her by eight years and is buried at Wellington, some 75 miles to the north, where his son Christopher had settled.

Roger and Maria had three other children who did not emigrate with them:
– Thomas Roger Yeo, who died at Yeolands, Swimbridge in 1899 at the age of 82
– John Yeo, who emigrated in to Australia in 1850
– George Pinsent Yeo, who died in Swimbridge in 1839 at the age of 5.
