The 1871 census for the St Pancras area of London lists John Yeo and his family at 15 Arlington Road, a house occupied by two other families. John is a 37-year-old cook born in Jersey. His 40-year-old wife Margaret (née Collier) was born at Brentford, and his children are Eliza (a scholar aged 17, born at sea), Mary (an upholsterer aged 16, born in Hackney) and John (a scholar aged 6, born in St Pancras).
John Yeo (1834–1882) was baptised at St Peter Port, Jersey to parents Thomas Yeo and Eliza Keeping [note 1]. No record of John’s marriage to Margaret has been found [note 2]; they had four children:
– Eliza Letitia Yeo (1853–1930, married Benjamin Oakley) [note 3]
– Mary Jane Yeo (1855–1939, married Edward Annis West Lewis) [note 4]
– John Thomas Yeo (1864–1925, married Edith Douglas Myhill) [note 5]
– Margaret Ellen Yeo (1865–1866).

Notes
1. Married in Jersey in 1833. Thomas is recorded as ‘of St Cleer, Cornwall’ (he was born about 1809 and died in Hampshire in 1837). Eliza is recorded as ‘of Boulder, Hampshire’.
2. Did they marry in Jersey?
3. Eliza’s birth was not registered in England. Her baptism record (St Marylebone Christ Church, 1853) makes no mention of her place of birth, so the only indication we have is ‘at sea’ from the 1871 census record quoted above.
4. Birth registered at Hackney as Mary Ann Yeo.
5. Married at the parish church of St Saviour, Southwark in 1889.
