Yoe in the 1881 census

People in fifteen households are recorded in online indexes to the 1881 census for England and Wales with the surname Yoe. None appear to be accurate.

In fourteen cases the surname was incorrectly written as Yoe:

1. 36-year-old agricultural labourer William Yoe, living in Stokeinteignhead but born at Tedburn St Mary. Listed with him are his 32-year-old wife Mary A. Yeo and his children Ana (age 14), William (10), Albert (9), Florence (5), Joe (3) and Mary E (1) – the eldest four born at Cheriton Bishop and the youngest two in Stokeinteignhead. They are a clear match to the family of William Yeo and Mary Ann Powlesland, who married in 1866.

2. 34-year-old agricultural labourer John Yoe, living in St Martin, a parish including Looe in Cornwall, with his 44-year-old wife Eleanor M. Yoe and his children Maud M. (age 8), Charles C. (6),  Emily R. (3) and Albert J. (18 months). They are a clear match to John Yeo and Eleanor Mary Quant, who married in 1868.

3. 23-year-old coachman Henry Yoe, living in Hackney with his 22-year-old wife Annie M. Yoe, his children Annie E. Yoe (age 1) and Clara E. Yeo (age 5 months), his sister-in-law Elizabeth Brittin and niece Annie L. Brittin. They are a clear match to Henry Yeo and Annie Maria Brittin.

4. 40-year-old Thomas Yoe, farming 60 acres at Worden, West Putford, listed with his 29-year-old wife Elizabeth Yoe, his daughter Annie (age 10 months) and a 14-year-old son whose name cannot be deciphered. Thomas is at the same farm in 1891 and is recorded as Yeo, listed with his wife Jane, two daughters and his father Thomas Yeo.

5. 38-year-old married woman Sarah Yoe, living in Ystradyfodwg, Glamorganshire with children William Thos. Yeo (age 10), Bassett Yoe (5) and Margaret Yoe (3). The children are a clear match to William Thomas, Bassett and Margaret Yeo, whose births were registered at Pontypridd in 1870, 1876 and 1878 respectively, with their mother’s surname recorded as Cole. Sarah Cole had married William Yeo in Cardiff in 1869; William was still alive in 1881 and it is not clear why he is not recorded in the household.

6. A 45-year-old carpenter recorded as E. Yoe and living at 2 Kingshill Terrace in Swindon. The enumerator has noted only the initials of his wife (C.) and the initials of his six children. They are a clear match to the Edward and Charlotte Yeo who are living in the same street in 1891 with children Harry, Charlotte and Charles. Edward Yeo and Charlotte Orchard had married in 1853.

7. 66-year-old lodge keeper John Yoe, a widower living in Sherborne, Dorset with his 23-year-old daughter Eliza Yoe (a milliner) and a six-year-old who appears to be Eliza’s daughter. John Yeo and Eliza Curtis had married in Plymouth in 1839. Eliza died in 1876 and John had re-married by 1881, though his new wife Sarah Yeo is not shown in the census return.

8. 52-year-old innkeeper James Yoe, living in Trinity Street, Plymouth, his birthplace recorded as South Tawton. James is listed with his 49-year-old wife Mary Yoe and his 14-year-old daughter Elizabeth C. Yoe. They are a clear match to James Yeo and Mary Ann Gillard, who married at South Tawton in 1851.

9. 52-year-old Ellen Yoe, living in Mount Street, Stoke Damerel with her children Emma (age 18), George (16) and Julia (14). They are a clear match to the family of George Yeo and Ellen Buckthought, who married at Stoke Damerel in 1856. George was in the Royal Navy, which probably explains his absence on the night of the census.

10. 8-year-old Ethel Yoe and 5-year-old John Arthur Yoe, listed in the household of 77-year-old Elizabeth Williams in Swansea. They are a clear match to Ethel Jane and John Arthur Yeo, born in 1872 and 1875 respectively to Frank Ash Yeo and his second wife Mary Dowson. They are recorded as Elizabeth’s daughter and son, but this is clearly incorrect given her age; it is not known how or whether they were related to her.

11. 61-year-old housekeeper Sarah Yoe, living in Milton Abbot and recorded as a widow born at Gunnislake. Also in her household are her married daughter Anna Bickle (age 23), daughter Selina Yoe (18), son Michael Yoe (14) and Anna’s husband and daughter. Sarah is a clear match to Sarah Morgan, who married William Yeo at Merstham, Surrey in 1840 (William died in 1876).

12. 4-year-old Sarah Yoe, listed with her aunt Sarah Bower in Ashton Street, West Ham. She appears to be a match to the Sarah Yeo whose birth was registered at Poplar in 1877 to parents Thomas Yeo and Jane Margaret Wright.

13. 15-year-old William Yoe, listed in the household of farmer William Middlewick at Drewsteignton and described as a ‘farm servant’. His birthplace is recorded as Spreyton, making him a match to the William Henry Yeo born there in 1865 to parents Robert Yeo and Ruth Ponsford.

14. 41-year-old mason John Yoe, living in Bristol with his 39-year-old wife Mary A. Yoe. They are a match to John Yeo and Mary Ann Crook, who married in 1864.

Further research is needed to clarify the remaining record, but it is unlikely that Yoe is correct:

1. 19-year-old Jane Yoe and 21-year-old Alice Yoe, recorded with Mary Norton at 73 Lambs Conduit Street in the Holborn area of central London. They are both recorded as unmarried and as needlewomen, and might have been working for Mary. They have not been identified.
