The 1871 census for Mile End Old Town in the East End of London is hard to read and the return covering Bedford Place in the parish of St Philip (RG10/556/52) is especially difficult.
Living at 8 Bedford Place is 43-year-old James Squire, a widower. He is recorded as the head of the household and was born in Middlesex. His occupation is illegible.
The only other person listed is a 35-year-old widow called Yeo, whose forename appears to be Ann. Her occupation and relationship to James are illegible and her birthplace is written simply as ‘Devonshire’.
