Joseph Yeo and Sarah Ann Oxenham

The 1916 census for Oakdale in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan [note 1] records Joseph Yeo, a 54-year-old farmer born in England – see also Descendants of Thomas Yea of Yea, Wiveliscombe.

Listed with Joseph in the 1916 return are his wife Sarah (also 54), their daughters Lena (17) and Mary (12) and their granddaughter Blanch Yeo (11) [note 2].

Joseph Yeo had married Sarah Ann Oxenham at the parish church in Bampton in 1884 [note 3]. They had eight children, all of whom except Jack appear to have emigrated with their mother in 1910 [note 4]:
– Margaret Fanny Yeo (1886–1955, married William Wood and Albert Mason) [note 5]
– Joseph Henry Yeo (see below)
– Jack Yeo (see below)
– Marian Annie Yeo (born 1893)
– Ophelia Oxenham Yeo (1895–1961, married Murdoch Albert McFarlane)
– Dennis Oxenham Yeo (1897–1954, married Clara Otto, son Russell Yeo, 1923–2018)
– Leena Kathleen Yeo (born 1899)
– Mary Yeo (born 1905).

Joseph Henry Yeo (1888–1943, son of Joseph Yeo and Sarah Ann Oxenham) married Winifred Kate Gooding. They had three daughters:
– Vera Winifred Yeo (1920–2005, married Wilfred Thomas Swain)
– Edith Oxenham Yeo (1922–1995, married James Gristwood)
– Irene Kate Yeo (1928–1928).

Jack Yeo (1890–1951, son of Joseph Yeo and Sarah Ann Oxenham) married Rosa Maud Gooding before emigrating in 1913 [note 6]. They had four children, two in England;
– John Gooding Yeo (1908–1969 [note 7]), married Ethel Miriam Wylie)
– Miriam Phillis Yeo (born 1912)
and two in Saskatchewan:
– Josephine Muriel Yeo (born 1916)
– Dorothy Pearl Yeo (born 1921).

Notes
1. Fellis Yeo (age 6, born in Wales) appears to be listed further down the same page on the census return, but the handwriting is not clear. Can anyone identify him?
2. Daughter of their eldest daughter Margaret.
3. Marriage registered at Tiverton.
4. Joseph had emigrated the previous year. He and Sarah are recorded in Oakdale, Saskatchewan in the 1916 census.
5. Baptised as Margaret Fanny Yaw. Her daughter Blanche Eleanor Yeo (born 1905) was recorded as Blanche Eleanor Wood after Margaret’s first marriage.
6. Recorded in Kindersley, Saskatchewan in the 1921 census, occupation farm labourer.
7. Birth registered at Tiverton as Jack Yeo Gooding.
