On 27 August 1931, the North Devon Herald carried a report of the funeral of Mrs Martha Cowler of Coombe Martin the previous Saturday, 22 August. The report refers to the church service at Ilfracombe, to the burial in Holy Trinity churchyard and to Martha’s having moved to the area from Hatherleigh a number of years previously. The list of mourners includes her brothers Isaac and Jack Yeo.
The 1911 census recorded 38-year-old Martha Cowler with her husband William Cowler. Also listed are four children, who appear to be from William’s 1894 marriage to Minnie Rook [note 1].
Minnie died in 1907 [note 2], and William married Martha Yeo – who was born in 1873 to parents James Yeo and Susan Martin of Hatherleigh – at the parish church of St Philip and St James, Ilfracombe in 1908. There is no record of their having any children.
