Alfred William Yeo was born in London in 1863, to parents George Robinson Yeo (1837–1901) and Sarah Ann Martin. His grandparents were John Charles Thomas Punshon Yeo and Amelia Wallis.
From humble beginnings – he started work in an iron foundry and his father was a house painter – he became Mayor of Poplar in 1903, Liberal MP for Poplar in 1914, and was knighted in 1918. He died in Essex in 1928.
Alfred married Mary Ann Brown in 1888. They had one son:
– Clifford Alfred Yeo (1903–1974, married Marjorie Gillies, three children).
