William Yaw (1754–1829) married Betty Galsworthy at Tiverton in 1786. They were both previously unmarried and appear both to have been resident in the parish, as banns of marriage had been read there. They baptised four children at the same church:
– Elizabeth Yaw (1789–1869, married George Melhuish)
– John Yaw (1792–1843, served in the Grenadier Guards)
– Mary Yaw (baptised 1794)
– William Yaw (1797–1832, married Nancy Phillips at Tiverton in 1831)
and then moved to Cheriton Fitzpaine, where three further children were baptised, with their surname recorded as Yaw or Yawe:
– Mary Yaw (baptised 1799, appears to have died as an infant)
– Mary Yawe (baptised 1802)
– Joseph Yawe (see below).
Betty was buried at Cheriton Fitzpaine in 1851.
Joseph Yaw (1804–1876, son of William Yaw and Betty Galsworthy) married Sarah Lavercombe at Poughill, near Crediton in 1833. They lived at Cheriton Fitzpaine, where they had five children, whose surname was recorded as Yeo in their baptism records:
– Mary Anne Yeo (1833–1897)
– William Yeo (1839–1890, married Harriet Fouracres, nine children)
– John Yeo (see John Yeo and Alice Jane Bull)
– Emily Yeo (see below)
– George Yeo (see below).
The 1861 census also records Joseph with the surname Yeo, as a 65-year-old tanner’s labourer, at 5 Upham Buildings in Cheriton Fitzpaine. Listed with him are his wife Sarah Yeo (age 48, born at Poughill) and his sons William Yeo (21, a gardener) and George Yeo (10).
Emily Yeo (born 1846, daughter of Joseph Yaw and Sarah Lavercombe) had two children:
– James Royal (born 1875) [note 1]
– Mary Ann Yeo Royal (born 1877, married Frederick Bullock) [note 2].
No record has been found of a marriage between Emily and her children’s father James Royal, and no record of her death has been found [note 3].
George Yeo (1850–1918, son of Joseph Yaw and Sarah Lavercombe) married Maria Warren. They had nine children:
– George Yeo (see below)

– William Yeo (1874–1949, married Florence Annie Symonds, three children)

– Albert Yeo (1885–1964, married Elizabeth Ellen Way)
– Florence Jane Yeo (1888–1978, married Frederick Holland)
– Lily Mary Yeo (1891–1972, married George Edward Reffold).
George Yeo (1870–1962, son of George Yeo and Maria Warren) [note 4] married Emma Collacott in London in 1892 [note 5]. They lived in Devon at Newton St Cyres and had two children there:
– Florence Mary Yeo (1894–1961, married Arthur Taylor)
– Lilian Maud Yeo (1896–1980, married Joseph William Wright)
before moving to Glamorganshire, where they had five further children:
– Emma Yeo (1899–1974, married Percy Harold Eaton)

– Walter Yeo (1906–1906).

Notes
1. Born in Exeter; birth registered at St Thomas in the third quarter as James Rayle. James is recorded with his mother Emily (who is shown as a widow) in the 1901 census at 11 Church Terrace in Chelsea. Ten years later, he is listed in the 1911 census at 55 Mulgrove Road, Fulham, as the brother–in-law of the householder Frederick Bullock. James is 33 years old and is working as a postman. James appears to have married Lizzie Celia Rose Roots (1889–1963) in 1915. James died in 1947.
2. Born in Exeter; birth registered at St Thomas in the first quarter as Mary Ann Yeo Royle. She married Frederick Edwin Bullock at the parish church of St Luke, Chelsea in 1897. James Royal (deceased) is recorded as Mary’s father on the certificate, but no record of his marriage to Emily has been found; the 1861 census lists him at Chatham Barracks, an 18-year-old soldier born in Ireland.
3. Emily is recorded as Emily Royal, a 33-year-old widow, in the 1881 census for London. She is a visitor in the household of George Tolley at 22 Gale Street, Chelsea; also visiting is her 72-year-old widowed mother Sarah Yeo. George Tolley and his Devon-born wife Mary Ann were not related to Emily and Sarah, and are not the George Tolley and Mary Ann Towell recorded in Newton Abbot in 1881 – see William Towell and Elizabeth Yeo.
4. David Yaw has found an attestation paper signed by George when he joined the Devonshire Regiment at Exeter in 1888. George agreed to serve in this militia regiment for six years, giving his age as 18, his marital status as single, and his trade as labourer.
5. Married at the parish church of St John, Hampstead. Emma had been born in Cornwall in 1869.
