Punctuation in inclusive year dates

Inclusive year dates such as 1910–1976 in pedigrees on this site and in the Index are separated by a dash or en rule, not by a hyphen or minus sign.

For most searches and table filters, using only one of the two years will be adequate, but you might need to use both. If you search for the example 1910–1976 by entering a hyphen (producing 1910-1976) the search phrase will not be found.

If you need to enter a dash, it is straightforward to copy and paste one from an example elsewhere in a table or text. Or use one of these methods:
– In macOS, hold down the Alt or Option key and type a hyphen
– In Ubuntu Linux, hold down Ctrl-Shift-U and type 2013 [note 1]
– In Windows 10 or earlier, hold down the Alt key and type 0150
– In Windows 11 or later, hold down the Windows key and type a hyphen.

Note
1. This key combination might vary in different versions of Linux. If you are running Linux on a Mac, use Cmd-Shift-U instead of Ctrl-Shift-U.
