William Yeo – baker or mason?

Please read About Individuals before using any of the information on this page.

The 1891 census for East Stonehouse lists William Yeo and his family at 45 George Street. William is recorded as a 61-year-old mason born in Plymouth. His wife Harriett Yeo is 41 and was born at East Stonehouse. William has two sons: William John James Yeo (age 18, unmarried, apprentice cabinet maker, born Rochester, Kent) and Charles Henry James Yeo (age 7, scholar, born Plymouth).

William Yeo senior died at 45 George Street in 1910, aged 81. His death certificate records his occupation as ‘Formerly a Journeyman baker’ – so was there an error in the 1891 census return or did William change his occupation? The informant is his son ‘Chas H Yeo’, who gives an address in Northwich, Cheshire but was present at his father’s death.

William Yeo (a widower) and Harriet Jones married in 1872. Harriet was the mother of both the sons listed in 1891 – the birth of the first was registered at Medway in 1873 as William John Yeo [note 1] and the birth of the second was registered at Plymouth in 1883 as Charles Henry Yeo [note 2].

Notes
1. William died in 1925, apparently unmarried.
