The death of Ivy Aveling was registered at Sittingbourne in 1970, with her date of birth recorded as 9 December 1911. The year matches the birth of an Ivy Yeo registered at Oswestry in 1911 to parents John Yeo and Emma Mugford [note 1].
The 1939 Register records Ivy Yeo at 108 Winchip Street, Canterbury, a single woman, occupation ‘Waitress Hotel’. – she appears to be lodging with Henry and Emma Wall. Her date of birth is recorded as 9 December 1911, an exact match to the 1970 death registration.
The 1939 Register was used as a reference source for many years, in particular when the welfare state was being established in the late 1940s but also as late as the 1980s. For this purpose, women’s married surnames were added to it later, typically in capital letters and distinctly coloured ink. The word AVELING is marked against Ivy’s entry, together with the annotation ‘NR230 DIZ 13546’. This clearly links the 1970 death registration to the 1911 birth registration.
The annotation in the 1939 Register might indicate a 1946 marriage, but there is no record of the marriage in England or Wales in any year – so did they marry elsewhere, or perhaps not marry?
