Richard Fletcher Yeo and Matilda Churchward

Richard Fletcher Yeo (1842–1913) was the third son of George Yeo and Elizabeth Fletcher. He married Matilda Churchward at Wolborough in 1865.

Richard and Matilda had three children:
– Florence Yeo (1867–1952)
– Albert Winsor Yeo (1868–1956, married Leonora Gilbert) [note 1]
– Eliza Maud Churchward Yeo (born 1870) [note 2]
before emigrating to the United States and settling in Massachusetts. They had three children there:
Richard Louis Yeo
– Frank Churchward Yeo (1875–1958)
– George Ernest Yeo (born 1877)
before returning to England and having two further children [note 3]:
– Ethel May Yeo (1880–1962, married Arthur Howard Kenwrick)
– Beatrice Maud Yeo (1882–1972, married Montague George Smith).

After Matilda’s death in 1907, Richard married Ellen Furneaux Heath [note 4] at the parish church of St Andrew, Plymouth in 1912; there were no children from this marriage. Richard died in Sidmouth the following year [note 5].

Notes
1. Albert became a Methodist minister. He and Leonora had a daughter Florence Yeo (1904–1919).
2. Did Eliza emigrate with her parents? There appears to be no record of her marriage or death in records for England and Wales.
3. The 1901 census for East Street, Bovey Tracey, records 58-year-old builder and contractor Richard Fletcher Yeo with his wife Matilda (age 57), son George E. Yeo (age 24, a piano tuner) and daughter Beatrice M. Yeo (age 19).
4. Née Watson, widow of Arthur Heath. Ellen lived until 1928.
5. Richard’s probate record describes him as a retired builder of Dalegarth, Torquay. His will was proved at Exeter by his sons Albert, Richard and Frank. He was buried at the municipal cemetery in Torquay.
