The passenger list for the Cunard Liner Campania, which left Liverpool on 7 May 1898 bound for New York, includes 32-year-old Mary Yea of Newton Abbot [note 1]. Her final destination is Cleveland, Ohio and the passenger list notes that her fare of $10 had been paid by her husband H. Yea of Dean Street. With Mary are her three stepdaughters, whose names are recorded as Alice Yea (age 16), Gertrude Yea (14) and Ida Yea (11).
By the time of the 1900 census the family has been reunited, and they are living in Collinwood, near Cleveland. Henry Yea is a 40-year-old plumber and tinner, his wife Mary is 33 and their daughters are Gertrude (age 17) and Nellie (10).
Henry Widger Yea (1859–1918, son of James Yea and Sarah Parnell) was born in Torquay. He married Kezia Bathe in 1881; they had five daughters [note 2]:
– Alice Mary Yea (born 1881, married Benjamin Franklin Addis)
– Florence Amy Gertrude Yea (born 1882 and recorded later as Gertrude, married George Walter Birch)
– Edith Maud Yea (born 1884 and recorded later as Ida, married Albert James Kerfoot)
– Ethel Kate Yea (1888–1888)
– Elizabeth Ellen Yea (born 1889 and recorded later as Nellie, married Bert Bendell).
Kezia died in 1889. Henry re-married in 1896 – his second wife was Mary Angus Giles. He emigrated to the United States on his own in 1897, eight months before Mary sailed to join him. They had a son:
– Henry Albert Widger Yea (born 1900, married Muriel Margaret Coffman).
