People in nine households are recorded in online indexes to the 1891 census for England and Wales with the surname Yoe. The analysis below suggests that Yoe is inaccurate in all these records.
In four cases the surname was incorrectly written as Yoe by the census enumerator:
1. 16-year-old Agnes M. Yoe, one of two boarders in the household of Sarah Bryant in Wellington, Somerset. Agnes is working as an assistant schooteacher and was born in London. She is a clear match to the Agnes Martha Yeo born in 1875 to parents Walter Herbert Yeo and May Ann Brooks [note 1].
2. 54-year-old painter and decorator George Yeo, recorded in London [note 2] with his 58-year-old wife Ann and 19-year-old son Ernest. They are a good match for the family of George Robinson James Yeo and Ann Martin, who married in 1856 and whose son Ernest James Yeo was born in 1872.
3. 14-year-old Mabel Yeo, a visitor in the household of Henry Capewell in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. Her birthplace is recorded as Ireland; she appears to match the Mabel Yeo whose birth was registered at Middleton in 1875.
4. 54-year-old railway signalman William Yoe, whose birthplace is shown as Tetcott. Listed with him are his wife Elizabeth R. Yoe and sons William and John Yoe. They are a good match to the family of William Yeo and Elizabeth Robins Treble, who married in Holsworthy in 1858.
Further research is needed to clarify the remaining five records, but it is unlikely that Yoe is correct:
1. 43-year-old Elizabeth Yoe, a lodger in the household of Catherine Morgan in Hindpool Road, Barrow-in-Furness. Elizabeth is working in a factory and her birthplace is shown as Ireland. She has not been identified.
2. 27-year-old Emily Yoe, recorded in the household of Catherine Clatworthy in Torrington Place, Plymouth. Emily is working as a domestic servant and her birthplace is shown as Stratton. She has not been identified.
3. 31-year-old George Yoe, a boarder in the household of Sarah Addams in Panteg, Mommouthshire. His birthplace is recorded as West Down, Devon and his occupation as ‘not known’. George might have been born in 1860 to single mother Ann Yeo, but his identity has not been confirmed.
4. 16-year-old Polly Yoe, listed at Cramlington, Northumberland in the household of miner John Coram and recorded as his daughter. Polly’s occupation is shown as housekeeper.
5. 4-year-old Thomas Yeo, listed in Frome, Somerset in the household of 66-year-old widow Elizabeth Jones and recorded as her grandson. His birthplace is shown as Frome, but he has not been identified.
