Robert Yeo and Jane Paddon

Robert Yeo (1805–1847, son of Robert Yeo and Sarah Leworthy) married Jane Paddon at St Peter, Barnstaple in 1830. They had six children:
– Robert Yeo (baptised 1830)
– Joseph Greek Yeo (1833–1836) [notes 1, 2, 3]
– Louisa Ellen Yeo (1837–1899)
– William Yeo (see below)
– Joseph Greek Yeo (born 1842) [notes 3, 4]
– John Leworthy Yeo (born 1847).
The 1841 census return for Salem Street, Barnstaple records Robert and Jane with children Robert, Louisa and William.

Robert was a mariner; he and his family moved to Bristol – perhaps because of the connection to his aunt Susannah Edwards and his cousin John Edwards (see John Edwards and Susannah Yeo) – and were there in 1847 the birth of their son John was registered there. Robert died in the West Indies in 1847.

The 1851 census records Jane as a widow. With her are sons Robert (he had joined the Merchant Navy as an apprentice in May 1849 and is recorded in the return as a mariner aged 16) and John (aged 3), but her other children Louisa (12), William (10) and Joseph (8) are recorded in the Clifton Union workhouse, so life was hard for the family.

Jane lived until 1878. Her daughter Louisa died in 1899 after spending much of her life in the workhouse.

William Yeo (1839–1899, son of Robert Yeo and Jane Paddon) married Ann Croden [note 5] in 1862. They had two daughters:
– Jessie Ann Yeo (1863–1943, married James Franklin Hammond)
– Jane Leworthy Yeo (1868–1911, married Herbert Whitley Maddock).

Notes
1. Recorded by some researchers as Joseph Creek Yeo, probably due to inaccurate transcription.
2. Joseph was baptised at St Peter, Barnstaple, in 1833. He lived for only three years, and was buried in the same parish in 1836.
3. The source of Joseph’s second forename appears to be John Leworthy Greek (1818–1909), son of Joseph Greek and Mary Ann Leworthy (whose sister Sarah Leworthy married Robert Yeo – see William Yeo and Susannah Coates).
4. Nothing else is known about Joseph. Is it a coincidence that Joseph Hussey Yeo, for whom we lack a birth record, was born at about the same time?
5. Ann had a daughter Mary Celia Croden in 1861, who is listed with the family in the 1871 census as Mary C. Yeo but whose marriage to Alfred Bath in 1909 was registered under the surname Croden. She died in 1932.
