The 1911 census for England and Wales includes people living abroad on board naval ships or in the army at military establishments. 23-year-old Robert Joseph Yaw is listed St Andrew’s Barracks on the north coast of Malta; he is a 23-year-old private soldier in the Somersetshire Light Infantry and his birthplace is recorded as Taunton.
Robert Joseph Yaw had been born in 1887 to parents George William Yaw and Georgina Heard. The 1891 records his family at 29 Viney Street in Taunton – Robert is the third of five children listed.
The 1921 census shows that Robert survived the First World War – it lists him at Lucknow in the Uttar Pradesh province of India. He is still with the Somersetshire Light Infantry but is now a 32-year-old Company Sergeant Major. No subsequent marriage or death record has been found for him.
