On 27 August 1931, the North Devon Herald carried a report of the funeral of Mrs Martha Cowler of Coombe Martin the previous Saturday, 22 August. The report refers to the church service at Ilfracombe, to the burial in Holy Trinity churchyard and to Martha’s having moved to the area from Hatherleigh a number of years previously. The list of mourners includes her brothers Isaac and Jack Yeo [note 1].
The 1911 census had recorded 38-year-old Martha Cowler with her husband William Cowler. Also listed are four children, who appear to be from William’s 1894 marriage to Minnie Rook [note 2].
Minnie died in 1907 [note 3], so Martha appears to have been living with William from some time between then and 1911. However, there is no record of their having married.
