Mary Harry Yeo was baptised in London in 1821, to parents James Yeo and Hannah Strugnill Saunders at the parish church of St Marylebone.
Mary married James Cocks at the same church in 1844. On their marriage certificate, James is recorded as a bachelor and his occupation as boot maker; his father James Cocks is also a boot maker. Mary is recorded as a spinster, daughter of tailor James Yeo. They were both resident in the parish and banns had been read.
James and Mary have not been found in the 1851, 1861 or 1871 censuses. The 1881 census records them at 6 Draper’s Place – an address in the St Pancras area occupied by six families – with their surname spelt Cox. James is a 62-year-old shoemaker born in Marylebone and Mary is a 60-year-old dolls’ shoemaker. Two sons aged 25 and 22 are listed in the household, also a 5-year-old girl who might be a granddaughter.
