Sheila Yeo corresponded in 2001 with Beth Fiddler [note 1] about Yeo lines in Calvert County, Maryland and with Jean Gaw Buckey [note 2] about Yeo lines of descent in Richmond County, Indiana. They speculated that there might be a common line of descent for these families, which proved to be correct. Sheila’s correspondence three years later with Mary Hummell about the descendants of Joshua Yeo (1790–1836) [note 3] and Alice Duffy [note 4] – who moved from Virginia to Ohio [note 5] – was also helpful. A pedigree from Mary showed Joshua and Alice’s children, and research by Trish Hayward has added to the information we have.
Joshua Yeo (1790–1836) married Alice Duffey in Ohio about 1815. They had 12 children, three in Virginia:
– David Yeo (born 1815)
– Hiram Yeo (see below)
– Ann Yeo (c1819–c1875, married James Scarf)
and nine after they moved to Ohio:
– Levi Yeo (1821–1849)
– Mary Yeo (1823–1849)
– Flavilla Yeo (1824–1849)
– Milton J. Yeo (1826–1854)
– Bernard Yeo (1828–1853)
– Sarah Yeo (1829–1909)
– Joshua Yeo (1831–1849)
– Alcinda Yeo (1834–c1885, married Ethan Kelly)
– Jonas William Yeo.
Hiram Yeo (1816–1899, son of Joshua Yeo and Alice Duffy) married Rachel Ann Shinn at Hilsboro, Ohio in 1837. They had five children:
– William Francis Yeo (1838-1876)
– Joshua M. Yeo (1840–1916)
– Mary Alice Yeo (born 1841, married Samuel Earl Mackey 1866) [note 6]
– Laura Emma Yeo (1846–1882, married Joseph Jones Woods) [note 7]
– Albert G. Yeo (1850–1917).

Notes
1. Beth Fiddler was investigating descendants of John Yeo and Semelia Garretson née Bedell, who married in the 17th century.
2. Jean Gaw Buckey was investigating Harry Martin Yeo and Laura Elizabeth Shute, who married in 1892. She noted that Harry’s parents Jonas and Emily Yeo were mentioned on the marriage registration document.
3. Mary Hummell, writing to Sheila Yeo in 2004, reported a line of descent for Joshua based on family papers – showing that Joshua was the elder of two sons of English emigrant Michael Yeo (1764–1836) and Sarah Jones (born Virginia 1765), the younger son being John Yeo. Mary stated that Michael was born and died in England, but no matching baptism or burial records have been found and children of Michael and Sarah would probably have been born in around the turn of the century, not in 1836.
4. A bond was issued in the state of Virginia on 4 March 1814 for the marriage of ‘Joshua Yoe and Alley Duffey’. The bride is described in the bond as ‘an orphan of Bernard Duffy’.
