Thomas Yeo and Agnes Ann Ridge

Please read About Families before using any of the information on this page.

Bratton Fleming is a small parish in north Devon, six miles north east of Barnstaple. Thomas Yeo was baptised there in 1860, the seventh of eight children of William Yeo, a local tenant farmer. The 1851 census return for Bratton Fleming records William [note 1] with his wife Mary and daughter Elizabeth. The 1861 and 1871 censuses also record William farming in Bratton Fleming. The 1891 census records William farming in Loxhore.

Thomas Yeo was living with his parents in Bratton Fleming in 1871. He married Agnes Ann Ridge at Loxhore in 1891 [note 2] and the census of that year records him farming at nearby Roborough; his widowed mother-in-law Mary Ann Ridge is living with them. The 1901 census records Thomas farming at Coombe, Loxhore with his wife Agnes, children Elizabeth (age 9), Mary E. (7), William H. (4), George (2) and mother-in-law Mary Ann Ridge.

Thomas and Agnes later moved to Shirwell. A headstone in the parish churchyard at Shirwell records that Thomas Yeo of Town Farm died in 1926 and his wife Agnes in 1935.

Thomas and Agnes had six children:
– Elizabeth Ann Yeo (1892–1969, married John Gould)
– Mary Edith Yeo (1894–1991, married George Ackland)
– William Henry Yeo (1896–1947, married Margaret Barrow)
– George Yeo (1899–1977, married Lilian Moore)
– Ida Helen Yeo (1901–1972, married Frederick John Pyne)
– Thomas Austen Yeo (1906–1994 [note 3], married Cynthia Annie Latham).

Notes
1. William’s birthplace is given as Swimbridge – was he related to one of the many Yeo families from that village?
2. Another Thomas Yeo, a labourer, married Mary Jane Huxtable at Loxhore in 1883.
3. Also recorded as Thomas Austin Yeo.
