Thomas Amice Ahier and Mary Yeo

Please read About Families before using any of the information on this page.

Mary Yeo is recorded in the 1841 census for Stoke Damerel, with her parents James and Mary Yeo and her brothers John and James. They are living in King Street, which runs parallel and to the north of Union Street. Her father James Yeo is a shoe maker, as are her two brothers.

Mary married Thomas Amice Ahier some 300 miles away in Liverpool in 1844, at the parish church of St John the Baptist, Toxteth Park. Their marriage certificate records Thomas as a bachelor and his occupation as a mariner, son of mariner Philip Ahier [note 1]. Mary is recorded as a spinster, daughter of James Yeo. They were both of Hughes Street, Toxteth Park, and they married by licence.

Thomas is absent – presumably away at sea – from the 1851 census. Mary Ahier, age 38, is recorded as the head of the household at 52 Stanhope Street, Toxteth Park. Listed with her are her 11-year-old son Thomas Ahier and 49-year-old master boot maker John Yeo, recorded as Mary’s uncle (this relationship has been altered to ‘Lodger’). Mary’s birthplace is given as ‘Devonshire, Devonport’ [note 2].

Mary died in Liverpool in 1852; Thomas re-married two years later, and lived until 1891.

Notes
1. Thomas was born in Jersey.
2. No matching baptism record has been found. Given the age (38) recorded when her death was registered in 1852, this would have been about 1814.
