Some of the records relating to this couple are contradictory.
They married at the parish church in Uffculme in 1895 [note 1]. The groom is recorded as a bachelor, a gamekeeper of ‘S Stephens Willand’ [note 2], and the bride as a spinster, a servant of Bradfield – a large manor house near Uffculme.
Banns of marriage had been read at Uffculme. The banns record describes the groom as a ‘widower of St Stevens, Hampshire’ and the bride as a ‘widow of this parish’.
So is the banns record correct and were William and Mary both previously married? Had William been living in Hampshire, and where?
