John Fullerton Yeo

The 1911 census return for 96 James Street in Devonport records John Yeo, a french polisher and a widower aged 71, living on his own and working for a furniture maker. He died the following year – the registration record shows him as John F. Yeo and his age as 73.

John, a son of William Yeo and Elizabeth Fullerton, had married twice. He first married Mary Jane Lock at Stoke Damerel in 1877. Was Frederick Fullerton Yeo, whose birth was registered at Stoke Damerel the following year, a son of this marriage?

John then married a widow, Jane Ann Coffin née Smith, at the register office in Plymouth in 1866 when they were both in their mid forties. Their marriage certificate describes the bride as a widow (had she previously been married to Henry Coffin?) and the groom as a bachelor (did he give false information or was this an error?). John’s occupation is recorded as ‘Turner and French Polisher’, a good match for the 1911 census record quoted in the first paragraph.

The 1866 marriage certificate shows John’s father William as a carrier and turner.
