Bratton Fleming is a small parish in north Devon, six miles north east of Barnstaple. Thomas Yeo was baptised there in 1860, the seventh of eight children of William Yeo, a local tenant farmer.
The 1851 census return for Bratton Fleming records William, his wife Mary and his daughter Elizabeth. William’s birthplace is given as Swimbridge – how does he connect to the many Yeo families from that parish? The 1891 census records William farming in Loxhore.
Thomas Yeo was living with his parents in Bratton Fleming in 1871 but by 1891 is farming at nearby Roborough and has married Agnes. His widowed mother-in-law Mary Ann Ridge is living with them.
He later moved to Shirwell. A headstone in the parish churchyard at Shirwell records that Thomas Yeo ‘of Town Farm’ died in 1920 and his wife Agnes in 1935.
Thomas and Agnes had at least seven children: George Henry Yeo (born 1888), Elizabeth Ann Yeo (1892), Mary Edith Yeo (1894), William Henry (1896), Ida Helen Yeo (born 1901) and Thomas Austen Yeo (1906).
