William John Yeo and Phyllis Symons

The 1939 Register lists the residents of the Public Assistance Institution at Pages Cross, Launceston [note 1]. One of the people recorded there is 67-year-old widower William J. Yeo, described as a ‘general labourer (incapacitated)’.

William John Yeo (1872–1945) was a son of William Yeo (1809–1884) and his second wife Mary Ann Bartlett [note 2]. He married Phyllis Symons in 1913 – there is no record of their having had children.

1. This was the site of the former Launceston workhouse, which opened in 1838.
2. Mary Ann was William Yeo’s second wife. His parents were Thomas Yeo and Elizabeth Mason and he had previously married Ann Barfitt at Bridgerule in 1833 – William and Ann had a son Thomas Yeo (baptised 1835 at Bridgerule), who married Margery Creeper Lane at Lawhitton in 1857 and had four children.
