Yoe in the 1921 census

People in seven households are recorded in online indexes to the 1921 census for England and Wales with the surname Yoe. The analysis below suggests that for none of these records is Yoe accurate.

In six cases the surname was incorrectly written as Yoe by the census enumerator:

1. Twelve-year-old Alice Yoe, a visitor in the household of farmer Fred Herneman at Marwood. There appears to be no clear match to a birth registration, though a possibility is the Alice Yeo whose birth was registered at Honiton in 1909 and whose parents have not been identified.

2. Fifteen-year-old Edward Charles Yoe in Bristol, a visitor in the household of James Henry Tilley and recorded as his nephew. He is a good match for an Edward Charles Yeo whose birth was registered in Wiltshire in 1906 but whose parents have not been identified.

3. 62-year-old Eliza Ellen Yoe, a visitor staying in central London, recorded as unmarried and as a self-employed dressmaker from Hertfordshire. It is not clear from the layout of the census return whether she is staying at a hotel or with the family of Swedish diplomat Daniel Henriek Tiselius. She is a good match to the Eliza Ellen Yeo whose birth was registered in London in 1858 to parents Thomas Yeo and Ann Thatcher.

4. 61-year-old George Yoe, a boarder at the Holly Bush Inn in Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire. George is a labourer working for the Ebbw Vale Steel, Iron & Coal Company. His birthplace is recorded as ‘Westdown, North Devon’, making him a good match for the George Yeo whose birth was registered at Barnstaple in 1860.

5. Four-year-old George Yoe, living in Merthyr Tydfil in the household of coal miner John Adams; George is recorded as John’s grandson and has the annotation ‘mother dead’. He is a clear match to the George Henry Yeo whose birth was registered at Merthyr Tydfil in 1917 to parents William Yeo and Sarah Ann Oakes. Sarah Ann had died in 1918.

6. 15-year-old Gladys Yoe, a servant in the household of farmer Norman Mortimer at Bow, near Crediton. Her birthplace is recorded as Stoughton Barracks, Guildford, making her a clear match to the Gladys Annie Yeo who was born there in 1916 to parents William Yeo and Florence Annie Symonds.

In the remaining case the surname is written in the Register as Yeo but incorrectly indexed as Yoe:

1. The family of 56-year-old decorator Harry Yeo is clearly recorded as Yeo in the census return but has been indexed as Yoe. Listed with Harry at 59 Bright Street, Swindon are his 52-year-old wife Annie Martha Yeo and his children Harold Henry Yeo (age 27, occupation decorator), Bertha Pretoria Yeo (21, shop assistant), Winifred May Yeo (19, domestic service) and Reginald Charles Yeo (12, at school). Harry Yeo had married Annie Martha Hill in Swindon in 1892.
