People in fourteen households are recorded in online indexes to the 1901 census for England and Wales with the surname Yoe. The analysis below suggests that for none of these records is Yoe accurate.
In twelve cases the surname was incorrectly written as Yoe by the census enumerator:
1. 20-year-old Charles Yoe, a seaman in the Royal Navy, recorded as a boarder in the household of butcher John Pengelly in Hill Street in central Plymouth. He is a clear match to the Ernest Charles Yeo born in Plymouth in 1880 to parents John Yeo and Elizabeth Crout.
2. 42-year-old brass engraver Edward Yoe, living in Frome, Somerset with his 39-year-old wife Helena and children Ethel B. (age 14), Eva B. (12), Winnifred M. (10), Daisy M. (8), Walter E.C. (6), Gladys A. (3) and Frances K. (2). They are a clear match to the family of Edward Yeo and Helena Holden, who married in the nearby village of Batcombe in 1884.
3. 25-year-old Ellen Yeo, living in the household of estate agent Edwin Francis Chamier. Ellen’s birthplace is recorded as Bude, Cornwall, making her a clear match to the Ellen Ann Yeo born in 1875 to parents James Yeo and Mary Elizabeth Jewell.
4. 35-year-old Emily Yoe, living with the family of William and Rosamond Bastard in Yealmpton, Devon and looking after their children. Despite the incorrect birthplace shown for her, she matches the Emily Yeo born in 1863 to parents Richard Yeo and Elizabeth Penfound. The 1921 census records her as Emily Yeo, still in service, working for Plymouth solicitor Henry Pethybridge.
5. 60-year-old Joe Yoe, a boarder in the household of Frederick Stephenson in Bellingham, Northumberland. Joe is working as a blacksmith in a quarry, his birthplace is recorded inaccurately as Newcastle, Northumberland. His surname is recored as Yeo in the 1891 census for Edenhall, near Penrith, occupation blacksmith, birthplace Freystrop, Pembrokeshire. This makes him a match to the Joseph Yeo born at Freystrop in 1839 to parents James Yeo and Martha Thomas.
6. 15-year-old Mary Yoe, living in the household of Thomas Allen in Melina Road in Shepherd’s Bush and recorded as his niece, birthplace Southall. She is a clear match to the Mary Jane Allen Yeo born in 1887 to parents Charles James Yeo and Jane Caterer Allen.
7. 83-year-old widow Mary Yoe, living on her own in Pelynt, near Liskeard in Cornwall. Mary matches the Mary Snell who married blacksmith William Yeo at Lansallos in 1843.
8. 25-year-old housemaid Maude A. Yoe, living in the household Joseph and Miriam Phillips in Kilburn, north London. She is a clear match to the Maud Alice Yeo born in Devon on 1875 to parents Samuel Yeo and Emma Eliza Gosling.
9. 30-year-old Sidney E. Yoe, a cycle agent living in Sidbury with his 30-year-old wife Bessie. They are a clear match to Sidney Eastman Yeo and Bessie Underdown, who married in Sidmouth in 1899.
10. 31-year-old schoolmaster Thomas Yoe, living in Portishead, Somerset with his 30-year-old wife Mary E. Yoe and their children Thomas D. (age 8), Eric C. (5) and Herbert A. (3). They are a clear match to the family of Thomas Yeo and Mary Elizabeth Coleman, who married in Monmouthshire in 1892.
11. 38-year-old domestic coachman William Yoe, living in Clewer, Derbyshire with his 34-year-old wife Lydia Yoe and their daughter Lydia G. Yoe (age 9). They are a clear match to the family of William Yeo and Lydia Smith, who married in Exeter in 1891.
12. 32-year-old labourer William Yoe, living in Manchester with his 28-year-old wife Mary A. Yoe and their children Frederick (age 6), William (4) and Frances (2). They are a clear match to the family of William Yeo and Mary Ann Whiteling, who married in Salford in 1894.
Further research is needed to clarify the remaining two records, but it is unlikely that Yoe is correct:
1. 42-year-old Frederick Yoe, a boarder in the household of Ann Blower in Otterbourne, Hampshire. Frederick’s occupation is recorded as decorator and his birthplace as Camberwell in London. He has not been identified.
2. 14-year-old Mabel Yoe, a visitor in the household of retired publican Charlotte Vertigious in Candover, Shropshire. Mabel’s birthplace is recorded as ‘Ivywell, Devon’. She has not been identified.
