People in thirteen households are recorded in online indexes to the 1861 census for England and Wales with the surname Yoe. None appear to be accurate.
In five cases the surname was incorrectly written as Yoe:
1. 35-year-old stone mason James Yoe, listed at 7 Waterloo Square in the Bedminster area of Bristol with his 36-year-old wife Harriett and 11-year-old son James. They were all born in Bristol and are a clear match to James Yeo and Harriet Peters, who married in 1849, and their son James John Yeo, born in 1850.
2. 45-year-old Issac Yoe, farming 200 acres at Beechcombe, Lewtrenchard [note 1] with his 42-year-old wife Elizabeth, his children Mary A. (age 21), John J. (16), William (14), Samuel (11) and Ellen (4), and 27-year-old servant Betsy Baker. Isaac was born at nearby Inwardleigh. This household is a clear match to the family of Isaac Yeo and Elizabeth Luxmoore.
3. 36-year-old married woman Elizabeth Yoe, who was born at Bradford-on-Avon and is the wife of an ‘absent railway labourer’. With her are her children William (age 13), Henry (11), Ann (6), Charles (4) and Edward (2), and 13-year-old lodger Sarah Milford. Although no relationship is recorded, Sarah appears to be a relative of Elizabeth, making the family a match to that of William Yeo and Elizabeth Milford.
4. 24-year-old servant Elizabeth Yoe, living in Barnstaple in the household of Joseph Parker. Her birthplace is shown as Landkey, making her a match to the Elizabeth Yeo baptised there in 1837 to parents John Yeo and Grace Harding of Swimbridge.
5. 17-year-old shoemaker Richard Yoe, a boarder in Oak Street, Northampton in the household of shoemaker James Tipler. He is a clear match to the Richard Yeo born in 1844 to parents James Yeo and Susannah Poole.
Further research is needed to clarify the remaining eight records, but it is unlikely that Yoe is correct:
1. 54-year-old upholsterer Joseph Yoe, listed at 20 Richmond Terrace, Hackney with his 39-year-old wife Helen E., daughters Ann E. (age 26) and Laura (23) and visitor Robert Pope. This family has not been identified.
2. 47-year-old widow Ellen Yoe, listed at 2 Greengate Yard in Plaistow and rather improbably described as an agricultural labourer. With her are her son Henry (age 21), daughter Ellen (11) and son Joseph (8). This family has not been identified.
3. 53-year-old Richard Yoe, farming at Luxulyn in Cornwall with his 46-year-old wife Elizabeth. They have not been identified.
4. 13-year-old Emma Yoe, a maid in the household of John Shaw in the Yorkshire village of Suttton-on-Hull. According to the census return Emma was born locally, but she has not been identified.
5. 19-year-old seaman Richard Yoe, listed on board the ship Richard and Jane at Hayle in Cornwall. Richard’s birthplace is recorded as Lansallos; he has not been identified.
6. Robert Yoe, a 45-year-old foreman silk dyer in Salford, Lancashire. He is listed with his 45-year-old wife Martha and 10-year-old son Thomas – they have not been identified.
7. 41-year-old housemaid Grace Yoe, whose birthplace is shown as Dawlish. She is listed in the household of retired wine merchant John Allnutt in Clapham, south London. She has not been identified.
8. 56-year-old labourer Henry Yoe, listed with his 43-year-old wife Rebecca at 22 Claude Street in Tower Hamlets in London. Henry’s birthplace is recorded as West Ham and Rebecca’s as Woolwich – they have not been identified.
