Some of the records of this couple are contradictory.
They married in 1895. The marriage was registered at Tiverton in the fourth quarter, and took place at the parish church in Uffculme on 6 October. The groom is recorded as a bachelor, a gamekeeper of ‘S Stephens Willand’ [note 1], and the bride as a spinster, a servant of Bradfield, Uffculme [note 2].
Banns of marriage had been read at Uffculme on 15, 22 and 29 September. The banns record describes the groom as a ‘widower of St Stevens, Hampshire’ and the bride as a ‘widow of this parish’.
So is the banns record correct and were William and Mary both previously married? Had William been living in Hampshire, and where?
