The 1915 Register

A wartime census was taken on 15 August 1915, with some 25 million National Registration forms (which had been delivered to peoples’ homes by volunteers) being collected by enumerators. The forms have not survived; if they had they would represent a valuable genealogical resource.

A separate form was required for each person aged 16 to 65. On 14 August the Burnley Express announced that the information sought included a person’s age, whether they were born abroad, their marital status, number of dependent children and occupation.

An announcement published in the Stirling Observer on 15 August advised that forms delivered to households would be collected by enumerators between 16 and 21 August.
