Mary Yao in Shoreditch Workhouse

Please read About Individuals before using any of the information on this page.

The 1871 census records 90-year-old widow Mary Yao as an inmate of the workhouse in Kingsland Road, Shoreditch. Her birthplace is given as ‘Devonshire Collumpton’ – presumably the town of Cullompton in east Devon.

It is possible that there is a connection to the Yeo/Yaw family of Washfield, a short distance north-west of Cullompton (see Descendants of Thomas Yea of Yea, Wiveliscombe by Mike Darch and David Yaw), but it it not known who Mary married or what her previous surname was, so this connection remains speculative.

Yao is not a previously recognised variant of Yeo, but Mary’s death in 1875 was registered as Yeo [note 1].
