A marriage certificate from Hyde in Hampshire records that John Broad and Mary Ann Webb Lee married at the parish church of the Holy Ascension in 1873.
John is a 54-year-old widower, a woodsman from ‘Amberwood in the New Forest’, son of carpenter William Broad. Mary is a 51-year-old widow from Hyde, daughter of mariner Francis Yeo. Both parties signed their names. The witnesses to the ceremony do not include either father.
The couple appear to have lived at Amberwood after their marriage, as it is recorded as Mary’s place of residence when she was buried in 1878 [note 1].
Francis Yeo has not been identified, nor have Mary’s baptism (about 1821) or her previous marriage or marriages.

Note
1. Her burial record from Holy Ascension, Hyde records her as Mary Ann Broad. So were Webb and Lee previous surnames rather than given names?
