John Yeo – postman in Devon

Please read About individuals before using any of the information on this page.

The 1911 census records 49-year-old John Yeo, a boarder in the household of 53-year-old postman William H. Backway. Their address is shown as ‘Post Office, Milton Damerel, Brandis Corner’. The census return would have been completed by William, whose writing is reasonably clear; he appears to have been running the post office at Brandis Corner, some five miles east of Holsworthy. Also in the household are William’s 51-year-old wife Elizabeth A. Backway [note 1] and 17-year-old domestic servant Alice M. Blight [note 2].

John’s occupation is recorded as postman. His birthplace is shown as ‘Buckland, Devon’ (presumably Buckland Brewer). His birth was not registered, but he appears to have been born in 1862 to parents John Yeo and Grace Glover and to have died unmarried in 1941 at the age of 79.

1. William Henry Backway and Elizabeth Ann Venner had married in 1866 (marriage registered at Holsworthy). The census return states that they had no children.
2. Alice Maud Blight was born in 1894 (birth registered at Bideford).
