The 1871 census for Arlington Street, St Pancras records Jersey-born cook John Yeo and his family. John’s age is recorded as 37, his wife Margaret is 40 and they have three children: Eliza (age 17, a scholar), Mary (16, an upholsterer) and John (6).
John Yeo was baptised in Jersey in 1834 to parents Thomas Yeo and Eliza Keeping [note 1]. No record of his marriage to Margaret has been found [note 2]; his death was registered in the Strand district in 1882, age 48. Margaret was born in Brentford, Middlesex about 1830; her death was registered at Lambeth in 1883, age 53.
John and Margaret’s four children were born in London:
– Eliza Letitia Yeo (1853–1930, married Benjamin Otley) [note 3]
– Mary Jane Yeo (1855–1939, married Edward Annis West Lewis) [note 4]
– John Thomas Yeo (1864–1925, married Edith Douglas Myhill)
– Margaret Ellen Yeo (1865–1866).

1. Married in Jersey in 1833. Thomas is recorded as ‘of St Cleer, Cornwall’ (he was born about 1809 and died in Hampshire in 1837). Eliza is recorded as ‘of Boulder, Hampshire’.
