James Yeo and Susanna Martin

James Yeo (1813–1893) was baptised at Inwardleigh to parents William Yeo and Mary Medland [note 1]. He married twice. From his first marriage, to Sally Bolt at Okehampton in 1838, there were four children:
– Elizabeth Yeo (born 1839)
– William Yeo (see below)
– George Yeo (born 1849)
– Caroline Yeo (born 1851).
Sally died in 1862. James re-married in 1866 and had seven children with his second wife Susanna Martin:

– Mary Ann Yeo (1868–1961, married Henry Rugg)
– Frances Elizabeth Yeo (born 1870)
– Emma Jane Yeo (1871–1953, married Henry Cudmore)
– Martha Yeo (1873–1931) [note 2]
– John William Yeo (1874–1943, married Florence Upcraft) [note 3]
– Isaac Yeo (see below).

William Yeo (born 1840, son of James Yeo and Sally Bolt) married Mary Ebenezer Seldon. They had two daughters:
– Ilot Mary Leeson Yeo (1868–1943, married William George Whiteway)
– Minnie Yeo (1871–1948, married George Edwin Rickard Reeves)
and a further unnamed daughter (born 1873, died as an infant) before moving to Plymouth, where they had two more daughters:
– Emily Jane Yeo (1878–1970, married William Henry Symons)
– Ethel Kate Yeo (1881–1970, married Harry Dyer and John Squire Petherick).

Isaac Yeo (1876–1962, son of James Yeo and Susanna Martin) moved to London and married twice. He had three children with his first wife Bertha Ellen Whitby:
– Bertha Frances Yeo (1900–1969, married Albert Thomas Butler)
– Mabel Winifred Susan Yeo (1901–1979, married William Green)
– Stanley James Yeo (1916–1992).
Bertha died in 1930 and Isaac married Edith Gertrude Hollands née Maisey four years later.

Notes
1. William and Mary farmed at Yeo’s Butterford, Inwardleigh. James’s widowed mother Mary Yeo is recorded in his household in the 1841 census for Inwardleigh.
2. Martha’s death was registered with the surname Cowler, but no corresponding marriage has been found.
3. John married in London and served there as a police officer before returning to his native Devon. His wife Florence and his daughter Ethel Susan Yeo (1900–2000) died in Herefordshire.
