James Mooney and Eliza Yeo

The 1911 census records Scottish-born James Mooney at 8 Howard Street, Darlington; his age is given as 48 and he is working at an iron mill. Listed with James are his wife Eliza Mooney (age 29, born at Boldron, Co Durham), four children and two lodgers [note 1].

The 1939 Register records the same couple at Stanley, Co Durham. James is a 65-year-old retired joiner, Eliza is 55 and is listed as Elizabeth. Eighteen-year old Veronica Mooney [note 2] is listed with them.

James Mooney (1874–1959) and Eliza Yeo (1884–1954) had married in Co Durham in 1900.

Eliza’s parents have not been identified and she has not been found in any censuses before 1911. Her death was registered as Elizabeth Ann Mooney.

1. James and Eliza’s ages are recorded inaccurately: he was 38 and she was 27.
2. Veronica appears to have married Thomas Robbins. Her relationship to James and Eliza is unclear; she might have been their niece or granddaughter.
